Cat face and flowers on a thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A small fine line tattoo shows a cat's head in profile with a few whisker strokes and simple eyes, sitting above a cluster of three flowers with delicate petals. The linework is thin and even, with light hatching in the petals and no shading across the cat. The tattoo is black ink on pale skin in a black and grey photograph, centred on a smooth, softly lit limb with shorts visible at the top edge.

Inspector Ilse Varga had stopped checking the cat's papers years ago, though nobody had ever issued it any. The grey tabby kept to the sill of the booth at Hollin Pass, where the road crossed a stone bridge into the next country. It watched every lorry labour up the hill as if keeping a tally of its own.

On a wet Tuesday in April, a white van came up with a driver who would not open its back doors. He had a folder of forms and a face like damp paper. Ilse asked what he was carrying. Bulbs, he said, for a nursery in the valley. The cat dropped from the sill, trotted across the tarmac and sat at the rear bumper, staring at the doors with its ears flat. Through the vents came a smell of crushed green stems, sharp as cut hedge, and caught on the tyre were three pale flowers with small frilled petals.
Ilse had her hand on the radio when the cat began to yowl, low and steady, the way it did for the winter mail coach. The driver glanced down at it, then at her, and went grey beneath the cheekbones. She told him to open up. Under sacking lay bundles of cut blossom wrapped in wet newspaper, far too many for any nursery to need in April.
She logged it in her own hand: one van, flowers, cat satisfied. When the driver had been led away and the van sent down the hill, the tabby jumped back onto the sill and washed one paw, its tail curled neatly over the three flowers Ilse had set beside it.
