Owl with ornate keys and sunburst design
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A detailed pen drawing of an owl with a feathered crown, staring forward with intense eyes, set above a scaled chest. Ornate filigree scrolls flank the bird, and two crossed keys with a sunburst fan and dotwork shading sit below it. The linework is fine and uniform on cream paper, with the design shown in black ink only.

The lighthouse on Skerra had two keys, and by rights they should never have hung on the same nail. My grandmother kept the brass one for the lamp room and the iron one for the tower door, and she said the owl that lived in the eaves knew which was which better than either of us. Nobody on the mainland believed that. I didn't either, until the autumn the gale took the boathouse roof and I had to climb the stair in the dark with a torch that kept dying.

The owl was waiting on the top rail, feathers ruffled into a crown, staring at my light as if I owed it rent. I held up the iron key and it blinked, slow, the way a clerk does when he has already decided your form is wrong. Then it dropped off the rail and flew straight down the inner stair, and I followed it because there was nothing else to follow.
It led me to the lamp room floor, where the old sunburst grate was lifted and the sea was roaring under the rock. Someone had left the brass key in the lock, turned the wrong way. The owl perched on the frame and waited while I set it right, and the great lens began to turn above us, throwing its light out in long fans across the water. Somewhere out there a boat was coming home by that light.
In the morning the owl was gone and the keys hung on their separate nails, as they always had. The fishermen say the lamp has never once failed since. I don't tell them the bird was the one doing the keeping, and that I was only sent along to carry the torch.
