Red-capped profile with crows on upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a side profile of a figure wearing a red cap, with dark hair and a cigarette, beside three black birds in flight. Bold black outlines and flat red fill give it a graphic, hand-drawn look. The design sits on the outer upper arm, and the photo is taken indoors against a white shirt and a red-and-white diner-style setting.

The crows came to the kiosk on Saltmarsh Road the winter the gasworks shut, three of them, and sat along the railings as though someone had booked them. Tommy Reeve sold cigarettes and dog biscuits from a hatch in the wall, and he wore his red cap pulled low against the wind off the canal. He fed them crusts and never asked what they wanted, which was the wisest thing a man could do with crows.

They wanted nothing until the night his mother died owing forty pounds and a wedding ring to Cale Ambrose, who kept a pawn shop under the railway arches and wrote every debt in a green ledger. Cale did not chase money. He chased people, and he had already sent word that Tommy's hands would make up the difference. Tommy struck a match on the shutter and told the birds all of it, the way you would tell a priest.

The eldest crow hopped closer and said the ledger could be carried, but only at night, and only if Tommy gave them the first thing he saw at dawn. He agreed before he could think better. When he came to open the kiosk the sky over the canal was grey, and the first thing he saw was that crow sitting on his shoulder, cap brim tilted, with a single page of green paper folded in its beak. Under the arches Cale Ambrose found his shelves bare and a line of black feathers across the floor. Tommy never saw the ledger again. Each morning after, the three crows waited on the railings for him to look at them first.
