Compass and roses on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A realistic colour tattoo shows a silver compass with a glossy needle, partly framed by two pink roses and a green-leaved rosebud. The compass has fine metallic shading and the roses use soft gradients of pink, magenta and red with small highlights. The design sits centrally on the outer thigh against a plain background, with the top of a dark garment visible at the edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Fog came off the Trent before the lock keeper had finished his tea, thick enough that I lost the far bank from the tiller. Dad's compass was still in the drawer under the bread knife where Mam kept it, the glass cracked across one corner and the needle as steady as ever. I tapped it twice, the way he taught me, and watched the card swing and settle with its red fleck pointing north.

Mam had painted the roses on our cabin doors the summer before she left, two of them, pink as sugared almonds, one with a bud curled beside it. Every boatman on the cut knew the *Marigold Rose* by those doors. I looked at them now through the murk and they seemed closer than the water, the way things do when you have been alone on a slow boat too long.

We crept under the Torksey bridge at a walking pace, the horn sounding every hundred yards. A man on the towpath shouted that I had lost my way. I told him I had the compass and the roses, and he laughed, then stopped laughing when the needle held true through the arch and the tow rope went taut exactly where I had said it would.

By dawn the fog lifted in one breath and there was Gainsborough with its church spire and kettles already steaming on the bank. I wrote the time in the log and slid the compass back under the knife. Dad would have wanted it used, not kept in a drawer. I put my hand flat on the painted rose and left it there until the engine went cold.
