The ferry didn't run again on Tuesday, so the crate of transfers you sent has been sitting in the back room of the post office with the parcel tape still on. I opened it this morning with the bread knife. Eleven little sheets, each one a symbol with its name printed underneath in that careful typeface you think nobody notices. Pentacle, triquetra, the Eye of Horus. Mrs Gillies came in for her pension and stood over them for the length of a whole cup of tea.

She tapped the spiral and said her mother had kept one like it stitched on a cushion, the colours gone to nothing. Then she asked me which of them the Green Man was, because she wanted to be sure it was the one with the leaves growing out of his mouth and not the one with the beard. I told her I wasn't sure either. I have been staring at him all afternoon. He looks like someone trying not to laugh at a funeral.

The raven I cannot stop looking at. It sits on the chart with its wings spread and the star pressed into its chest, and the ink is so black it looks wet. Old Hector says ravens on the north side of the island mean a death is coming, and when I laughed he said that was why the ferry is always late, the birds are holding it.

Send me the triple goddess when you can, the three moons with the fat middle one. I'd like one sheet that doesn't have a name written under it.
