Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows six geometric line designs arranged in a grid on a dark textured background. The designs include nested diamonds and a crosshatched circle, inverted triangles with concentric arcs, a hexagon ringed by circles, a star-like polygon with a solid centre, a circle with crossing lines and a layered triangle. The linework is thin and uniform in pale grey-white, with a few solid filled shapes for contrast.

The rain had been falling on Tallow Market since Lent, and the stalls under the iron roof had grown tired of keeping their goods dry. Mother Hesket sold rulers and brass dividers from a trestle by the fish gate, and she was the only trader who wrapped her wares in oilcloth rather than laying them out for the wet to find.

One afternoon a boy came with a coin gone soft from his pocket and asked her for a circle. He wanted one that would not close, he said, because his father had walked out past the bridge and never once come back to the same place twice. Mother Hesket took a pair of dividers from the drawer, set the point in the scarred wood, and drew a ring as wide as his hand. Then she drew a second ring inside it, and a third, until the lines crowded together like ripples on a pond.
"Where is the centre?" he asked. She showed him a small solid dot where the point had rested. "Every ring turns around it," she said, "even the ones that feel far away. Keep your eye on that dot and you will find the road home, though the road will bend more than you like." The boy pressed the coin into her palm and went off with the drawing folded inside his coat.
Three days later the rain stopped. The fishmongers came to the gate in the grey light and found a square turned on its point scratched into the cobbles, with a mark at its heart, and a ring of small nicks running round it. Beside it the boy lay asleep against the wall, his father's boots tucked under his arms, and the stones were dry where he had slept.
