Pagan designs flash sheet
Black and grey · Flash
A black and grey flash sheet on a dark starry background, with the heading Pagan Designs above a grid of twelve labelled symbols. The designs include a black pentagram, triskelle, double pentacle, triple moon, crescent moon, sun, goddess figure, green man, snake labyrinth, heptangle, tree of life and raven. The drawings use fine white outlines and shading, arranged in an even three by four layout.

Day 212, Tollmarsh. Rain came in sideways again, so I sheltered in what was once Quay Street's tattoo parlour, where the flash hangs behind sealed glass like relics in a reliquary. Twelve signs sit in a neat grid, white lines on black, with a painted starfield around them so the whole wall looks like night sky seen from a boat. Someone long gone lettered the top in careful capitals: PAGAN DESIGNS.

The tide tables say the parlour flooded in the ninth year, so the glass has been shut ever since. I am copying the signs into this book because the gulls keep pecking at the pages I wrote last month. I walked the snake labyrinth with my finger, turning left and right until the coil seemed to loosen around my wrist. The raven I could not stop looking at. Its feathers are drawn in fine strokes, wings half lifted, as if it had just delivered a message and was waiting for an answer.
Mother used to say the green man's face was the first thing she saw when she came off the ferry, carved above the chapel door, and that the heptangle showed seven ways out of any room. I believed her. Last winter I wanted to learn which of the seven was mine, so I stood in the middle of a seven-pointed star chalked on the chapel floor and waited.
Nothing came but the tide, and then the raven, which landed on the glass outside and tapped once, as though asking for the next line. I wrote it down. Tomorrow I will walk the labyrinth again and see where it ends.
