Triple moon with pentagram design

Black and grey · Flash

A bold black outline drawing of a triple moon symbol. Two crescent moons sit either side of a circle containing a five-pointed star, or pentagram, with the star's points touching the circle. The linework is solid and even, with no shading or colour, set against a plain white background.

Dora Penhallow kept the toll gate on Wenlow bridge, where the county line runs down the middle of the river and a man can stand with one boot in Devon and one in Somerset and owe money to both. She had a ledger, a tin cash box and a pentagram chalked inside the gatepost, which her father swore was to keep the drovers honest. The drovers were never honest, but they paid, because the ring around that star was the only thing on the bridge that did not shift when the water rose.

Three nights in every month the moon came up over the weir in three pieces, waxing, full and waning, and on each of those nights a stranger came to the gate asking to cross without paying. The first wanted to get home. The second wanted to be forgotten on the far bank. The third only asked the hour, and Dora told him honestly, because she had learned that a lie at that gate cost more than any toll.

The autumn her father died, the ledger ran out of pages in his hand and went on in hers. She sat at the gate with the cash box open and found the crescents drawn in the margin by his steady pen, and the circle beside them drawn by her own shaking one, never quite closed where he had always closed it. She understood then that a toll is only a promise to come back. So she left the gate standing open and walked out over the middle of the river to see who was waiting on the far side.
