A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The third ladder wobbled on the cobbles, so Orla Venn tied its foot to the drainpipe with her apron string and went on painting. Below her the harbour men stood with their caps in their hands, watching a line of gold lead climb the lintel of the salt warehouse. Three boats had gone down off the Mare Point since Lent, and the widow who owned the building had paid in advance, in coins that still smelled of her husband's pipe.

Orla drew the sun first, a wheel of rays spiked like a hand of knives, then the star inside it, one point at a time, because her master had told her that a pentagram drawn in a single breath would invite the wind to sit down and stay. Wings came last. She swept them out on either side in long black barbs, heavy at the shoulder and thinning to threads, the way the gulls hung over the breakwater before a squall.

By dusk the wind had dropped to nothing. The harbour lay flat as slate, and the widow came out with a lamp to look. She stood a long time before saying that one point of the star leaned toward the sea, and asked Orla to straighten it before the tide turned.

Orla climbed up with her brush and did not straighten it. That night the wind came back up the Mare, sniffing at the wet paint, and found the leaning point aimed exactly where it wanted to go: out over the water, away from the salt and the widow's door. In the morning the wings were dry, and the gulls sat along the sun's edge and would not be shifted.
