Pagoda and bridge landscape on upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A wide landscape scene covers the upper arm and shoulder, showing a red-roofed pagoda beside a lake, a curved red bridge over the water, and pink blossom trees under a pale mountain. Bare branches and a large pink flower frame the top of the design. The shading is soft and painterly, with washes of blue, green and pink that fade into lighter areas at the edges.

Rain had been coming off the awnings since six, and by eleven the canvas over Stall 14 sagged like a wet sail. Maud did not move the prints. She stood under the dripping edge with a cloth in one hand and watched a blue wash on a painting of a lake run down the glass of its frame in a thin, pale stripe.

"It's ruined," said the boy from the fish stall, leaning over to look. He had come to borrow a pencil and stayed to be rude about the price.

"It's not ruined. It's going where it wants to go." She lifted the frame and tilted it toward the light. Beneath the wash, a red bridge arched over water that had never been one colour, and a pagoda stood on the far bank with its roofs stacked like folded paper. Her grandfather had copied the scene from a tea tin in 1961, using a brush he had swapped for a packet of cigarettes. He never saw the lake. He said the tin had enough lake for both of them.

The boy asked whether the bridge was real. Maud said it was real in the tin, which was as real as anything got on a market day. The rain thinned to a drizzle, then stopped, and for a few minutes the pink trees along the shore caught the grey light and held it.

By noon the wash had dried the colour of weak tea, and the pagoda's roofs were red again, exactly the way they had been on the tin.
