Paintbrush on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A grey paintbrush is drawn on the inner forearm, with its bristle tip resting near the wrist crease and its handle running diagonally up towards the elbow. The linework is fine and the brush is shaded with soft grey tones that give the bristles and handle some depth. The pale skin and plain light background keep the focus on the tattoo.

The gallery rail was finally dry enough to lean on this morning, so I've been up here since six with the old sable, the one Dad's ferrule still bends a little at the throat. The wind off Carrack Ness keeps lifting the white before it sets, and twice I've had to scrape a stripe back to bare iron and start again. You'd laugh. I've spent two days arguing with a tin of gloss and the gloss is winning.

Mr Tregear, the keeper, brings me tea in a jam jar at eleven and tells me the last man they hired used a roller and the lamp went sooty for a whole winter. He isn't wrong about the roller. He is wrong about most things, mostly the weather, which he says is always about to turn and never does. Yesterday, under the rail where the paint had flaked, I found initials scratched into the iron: M.E. and a date in 1931. I've been wondering all week who she was and whether she argued with the gloss too.

This morning the brush left a thin grey streak on the sill that the wind couldn't reach. I didn't mind. I thought about her standing exactly here, one hand on the rail and the other steadying the brush against the swell.

So I've done what she would have done, I think. I've painted over the initials with the careful white, but I've left a hairline gap through the M so the sea can still find it. Tell Mam I haven't fallen off yet. The light goes on at dusk and I'll be up here to see it.
