Paintbrush tattoo on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A paintbrush is tattooed on the inner forearm, with the bristle tip near the wrist and the handle extending up and out of frame. The linework is soft and the shading gives the brush a rounded, three-dimensional look. The ink is grey on pale skin against a plain light background.

Nell had the lettering half done on the harbour wall when the tide turned, and the brush in her hand had gone stiff with the cold. She dipped it, wiped it on the rim of the tin, and pulled the stroke of the N down toward the gutter in one long movement, the way her father had taught her, the way nobody taught anyone anymore.

The shop had been Gillard's Ironmongery for sixty years. The new owners wanted it to say CAFÉ in gold leaf, and the council wanted the old name kept beneath in small capitals, so Nell had spent three evenings with a pencil and a ruler arguing with a sheet of paper. Her brush had a fine round belly that held a drop of paint for longer than it should, and a tip that came to a point only when she pressed nothing down at all.
At half five a man came along the quay with a dog and a flask and stopped to read the board upside down. "You're spelling it wrong," he said. She looked. The G was right. The second L had come out fat where she'd leaned on it. She could have fixed it with a dab, but the gold would have shown the join, so she sat on the upturned crate and waited for it to dry, and the man waited too, and the dog sat down between them as if it had been asked.
When the sun cleared the breakwater she had the name whole, both names, the old one smaller and underneath. The man nodded at it, said it looked like the old board, and walked on. Nell wiped the brush clean on her apron and laid it flat in the tin, bristles to the light, the way it had to be kept if it was to last another sixty years.
