Painted flash design of swirling red, orange, purple and blue flames rising above two dark glossy spheres with white sparkles, on a white background.

Painted flame and dark spheres design

Colour · Flash

The design shows tall, flame-like forms that curl upward from the lower left, shifting from red and orange at the top to violet and blue below. Two dark, glossy spheres sit in the lower centre, with bright highlights and small white sparkles scattered around them. The soft, painterly brushwork and smooth blending give the piece a loose, watercolour-like finish, and the composition is a tall, narrow vertical panel on a plain white background.

On the morning of the thaw the twin lodestones in the High Tower of Corvane begin to sweat smoke, and the old keeper's ledger, which you have never once been allowed to read, is shoved into your hands by a trembling clerk. You are the youngest lamplighter the city has ever had. Nobody else wants the climb.

The stairs are a spiral of wet stone that smells of pitch and cold iron. At the top the two spheres sit in their cradle like black eggs, glossy as river pebbles, and the little white sparks that drift off them each time the wind finds a crack in the shutters catch the lamp in your hand. Their warmth reaches you before you touch them. Beyond the window the braziers of the lower town lean toward the tower, their flames crimson at the crown and violet at the root, reaching upward as though someone were calling them home.

The ledger says the stones were never meant to be doused. For three hundred years the keepers poured water over them and the smoke only thickened, bitter and grey. Your hand finds the iron latch beside the cradle, and the last line on the page, written in a hand that shakes less than the clerk's, reads: let them breathe. You throw the shutter wide.

The wind comes in like a struck bell. Sparks lift from the spheres in a slow, glittering column, blue and violet and gold, and they drift down over the rooftops until the cooks in the lower town begin to light their evening fires from them, one hearth after another, and the city is warm again before dusk.
