Pair of angel wings on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raised hand with pale nude nails shows a small pair of outlined angel wings on the inner wrist, with the two wings angled apart. The linework is thin and dark, with feather detail drawn in fine strokes and no shading or fill. The image is in soft natural tones against a cream, fluffy background.

Edie had the left wing across her knees when the vicar's wife came in out of the rain, shaking her umbrella over the cutting table. The wings had come down from the church loft in a tea chest, two lengths of ash frame strung with goose feathers gone the colour of weak tea, and somebody in 1938 had stitched them to the wrong shoulders. Nobody in Hartley Market had touched them since the Coronation pageant.

"Can it be done by Saturday?" asked Mrs Pell, who had asked the same question on Tuesday.
Edie picked out a quill with the tip of her scissors. Each feather had to lie over the next like shingles on a roof, or the wing would not lift in the wind when the children ran them up the nave. She worked from the tip inward, counting under her breath, and by four o'clock the left wing was whole. The right one she laid beside it on the bench and found she could not quite make them match. One sat stiff and upright; the other wanted to drop its shoulder like a man leaning on a gate.
She thought about her father, who had made the frames and never once looked up from his bench when she spoke. Then she stopped thinking about him and pinned the right wing so it angled out from the left, a little apart, the way a bird holds its wings when it has just decided to leave the ground.
On Saturday the wings went up into the rafters on a rope, and the little Pell boy shouted that the angel was flying. Edie did not correct him.
