The organist had gone down with a cold, so at ten to two on the morning of the wedding I was the one bent over a borrowed upright in the church hall, trying to find the key of the hymn Dilys had chosen. Her father had written the tune out for me on the back of a seed catalogue. Nothing was marked above it except a fat treble clef at the start and two little beamed quavers sitting over the word home, as if he had drawn them to remind himself where to breathe.

I played it through three times and it sounded like a hymn being carried up a flight of stairs by someone who kept losing a step. Dilys came in with a tape measure still round her neck, laughing at me. 'Dad always sang it a semitone flat,' she said. 'He says the flat makes it sound like the sea.' Her mother, who had heard this argument for thirty years, put a cup of tea on the lid of the piano and told us both to stop fussing. The guests would sing what they knew, she said, and the church would forgive us.

So at half past two the doors opened and two hundred people rose to a key nobody had chosen. Dilys's father sang loud and wrong, the way he had evidently sung for three decades, and the quavers over home came out a beat early, pulled forward like a child running ahead to the gate. I kept my hands on the keys and followed him down the slope. Halfway through the second verse I heard Dilys laugh in the front pew, and I stopped worrying about the key altogether.
