Small feather tattoo on the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small feather is tattooed on the side of the neck, drawn in thin, delicate linework with soft grey shading along the barbs. The subject's head is turned away, and her hand with a large dark ring rests in her hair above the tattoo. The image has a warm, faded tone with a cream knit sweater in the background, and the feather is the clear focal point.

The gulls over Harrowgate Quay had always followed the boats in, and the year the herring failed, Mabel Crane's husband sailed out one grey morning and did not come back with the tide. She kept his brass lamp lit in the window anyway, because her mother had told her a lamp is a promise the sea can read.

In October a single grey feather came down the chimney and landed in the cold ash of the grate. It was long and soft at the base and sharp at the tip, and when she held it to the window the light went through it like water. Her neighbour, old Ansel who mended nets, said a feather that falls inside a house is a message from whoever is still out on the water. He told her to tie it where she would feel it against her skin, so the message could not slip away.
She pinned it under the knot of her hair, at the nape where the wind could not reach, and went down to the harbour each dawn to ask the boats. Nobody had seen Tom Crane since the Friday. Then, on the last day of the month, a boy came running up the steps with a sodden cap in his fist and a scrap of oilcloth tied round it, and inside the oilcloth was a second feather, identical to the first.
Mabel stood very still on the quay. The gulls wheeled and cried. She turned the feathers over in her palm and understood, at last, that they had never been messages from the sea at all, only from a man who had kept his promise and was walking home along the shore road, slowly, with a limp and a lamp in his hand.
