Pair of mirrored feathered wings line drawing
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows two mirrored wings drawn in thin black outline against a plain white background, with each wing built from layered, flowing feather shapes that taper into curled tips at the base. The linework is fine and even, with no shading or fill, so the design relies on the contour lines and overlapping feather strokes for its detail. It is in black and white only and has no body part or frame around it.

Mother Hesketh said the wings had been caught on the blackthorn at the forest's edge the morning after the great frost, and nobody in Low Ashby wanted to be the one to touch them. Tom Pennock touched them anyway, because his goat had gone through the hedge after them and he was not going to lose a goat to a pair of feathers.

They were two wings, one for the left and one for the right, and they were the colour of wet slate where the light caught them. Each feather was drawn fine as a hair and curled at its tip the way a fern does before it opens. When he lifted the left one from the thorns it weighed no more than a wet glove, and the right one clung to his sleeve until he shook it free.
He carried them home in a feed sack. His sister Nan hung them on the nail above the bread oven, where they stirred whenever the door opened. Nobody asked whose they were. In Low Ashby people had learned not to ask the forest questions it would answer.
The wings were gone by Candlemas. Tom found only a single curled feather on the flagstones, and he put it in his pocket. It was still there when the thaw came and the blackthorn flowered white along the edge of the wood.
