Every night the lamp at Scarrow Head had to be lit before the tide turned, and every night Ada Penrose climbed the hundred and twelve steps with the oil can knocking against her hip. The winter the cliff fell, the stair broke halfway up, and she had to take the rope ladder instead, with the wind tugging at her coat as if it wanted her to let go and be carried off over the rocks.

On the third night of the broken stair a stranger stood at the foot of the ladder. He had no boat and no coat, and where his shoulders should have been there were two wings of iron filigree, their edges curled like fern heads and their feathers ruled into rows of arcs. He said the light was owed to the sea, and that a debt paid in lamp oil was the only coin the sea would accept. Ada told him the sea could wait for its oil like everyone else.
The stranger laughed, and the sound went out over the water in a long spiral. He lifted one wing and laid it across the lamp housing, and the glass warmed and the flame stood up straight without a drop of oil in the reservoir. Then he asked for one thing in return: that she never climb the ladder alone. She agreed, because she was tired and the offer was fair. He flew off east toward the herring grounds, and the light burned until dawn with no keeper touching it.
Ada kept her side of it for forty years. Each morning, when the tide pulled back, the wet rock below the lamp showed the same scrolls and rows of arcs in the sand, as if a bird had walked there in its sleep. She tied a rope to the rail before every climb and never once went up alone, and the sea, which keeps its word in its own slow way, never once took her.
