Paisley and floral foot tattoos
Other · Colour · Photo
Two bare feet are shown with matching colour tattoos. The left foot has a swirling brown and pink paisley-style stem with flowers, and the right foot has a bird above a teardrop paisley shape with flowers and curling stems. The lines are bold and the shading is smooth, with pink, blue, green and brown ink on a plain dark background.

The shawl had come up from Glasgow in a tea chest, folded so hard that the teardrops had printed themselves onto the tissue, and Nell Caddick spent the first evening of the strike unpicking the knots of it under the lamp. Her husband sat by the range pretending to read the Gazette. Outside, the tip smoked against the dark, and nobody in Ferndale had been paid since March.

The pattern was a bird perched on a curl of stems, its breast left cream, its body filled with a blue teardrop the colour of the sky over the Taff before the dust got into everything. Nell had never seen a bird like that. Her mother had told her paisley came from the mountain weavers of the east, and that a stitcher could hide a whole journey in one leaf if she was patient enough.
On the third night she found the bird's eye was worked in a red thread that matched nothing else on the cloth. She picked it out with the point of her scissors and found a square of paper folded beneath, no wider than a fingernail, bearing a name and a pit number in pencil. Her brother's hand. She sat with it until the lamp guttered, then pushed the paper back where it had been and stitched the eye closed in pink, green and brown, the colours of the flowers her mother grew by the wash-house wall.
On Monday she walked the shawl down to Mrs Evans at the Co-op, whose sister in Glasgow could sell anything with a border. By Friday a letter came up the valley road, and folded inside it was a banknote with a small red thread pulled through one corner.
