Black line drawing of a botanical paisley and floral design with dotted mandala-style flowers on a white background, shown without any body placement.

Paisley and floral line drawing design

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows a detailed black line drawing of a paisley and floral motif, built from a central mandala-like flower, curling paisley shapes, pointed leaves and scrolls. The linework is fine and even, with dotted accents, hatched petals and small circles creating texture. The design is drawn in black on white with no colour, and it is arranged in a tall, asymmetrical composition that flows from the top right down to the bottom left.

The name badges have been sorted by old form group rather than surname, which is how you end up standing beside Priya Halloran by the trestle table, both of you holding a plastic cup of warm prosecco and pretending the room isn't full of people who used to ignore you.

She has a sketchbook under one arm, the cover held on with a rubber band that has given up. When she opens it, the pages are dense with pen work: scrolls that curl back on themselves, a flower built from rings of petals, little dots placed like seeds. Mr Kettering set you both the same task in Year Nine, to draw a pattern whose line never crosses its own path. You drew yours on the back of a geography worksheet and never finished it. She tore hers in half during a row about a boy neither of you remembers now, and she kept her half. You kept yours folded inside a dictionary for almost thirty years.

You take the dictionary out of your bag because you have no idea why you brought it, and the page falls open where the paper has been pressed flat. She lays her half against yours on the table. The paisley tails meet where the scroll breaks, and the dotted edge runs straight across the tear as if it had never been torn at all.

The caretaker begins stacking chairs around you, and somebody switches off the lights over the stage. You fold the drawing into your coat pocket. Priya hands you a biro from her lanyard and says, without looking up, that you're meant to keep going. So you start a new leaf on the margin of the dictionary page, its first curve running off the edge of the table.
