Pale flower and leaves on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a large pale pink bloom with a yellow centre, set among layered green leaves. The petals are rendered with soft shading and fine detail, and the greens vary in tone to give depth. A wide shot shows the design on the inner forearm near the wrist, with close-up views of the flower and the leaves beside it.

Dear Nell, the snow has shut the pass again, so I am writing this at the kitchen table of the Hollin Bank Inn with my boots steaming by the range. Mr Oakey has given me the room above the scullery, which smells of bread and wet wool, and I have not minded it once.

This morning I found a tangle of wild roses pushed up against the north wall of the stable yard, still flowering in the drifts as if nobody had told them the season was over. The blooms were the palest pink, almost white at the edges, with a yellow heart full of dust that the bees were still working. Mrs Oakey says her grandfather planted them for the bees and has never once pruned them. I cut one stem with my penknife and the cook pressed it for me between the pages of the almanac.

Then Tobias Reeve, the carter who came in on Tuesday with a load of slate, saw the stem on the table and asked if I would sell him a cutting. His wife is buried in the churchyard at Settle and he has never had anything growing on her grave but moss. I told him I had no right to sell what belonged to a wall, so I gave him the cutting instead, wrapped in wet moss and oilcloth, and he went off down the lane with it held out in front of him like a lantern.

I have kept back a second stem for myself. It rides in my coat against my ribs, where the warmth will keep it alive until the thaw. Write back before the road opens, and tell me whether the bees still come to the north wall.
