Palm tree and red sun on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A black palm tree with a curved trunk and hatched fronds stands on a small island above a solid red sun and three horizontal lines suggesting water. The linework is thin and mostly black, with fine hatching in the fronds, and the red fill on the sun is the only colour. The tattoo sits centrally on the inner upper arm against plain skin, with a softly blurred shop interior behind.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada Wren trimmed the wick at Scarrow Head before the sun went down, because her father's chest had given out the winter before and the rock stair was too steep for him now. From the gallery she could see the whole grey firth, and each evening the sun sank into it at the same notch between the two black stacks.

Her father had told her the old tale: that out past the stacks, where the sun went down, lay a low green island with one palm tree bent over the water, and that a keeper who kept the light true would be shown it on the last clear night of the year. Ada had laughed at him. Then one evening in October the fog lifted, and she saw a single curved trunk against a red sun, sitting on a line of water, its fronds combed out by the wind.

She wrote it in the log, as keepers must: wind south-west, visibility good, one palm tree observed. Then she turned the lamp down a half-turn, as her father had taught her, and waited for the island to go out like a coal.

The boatman asked her next morning what she had seen, and she told him flat water and nothing more, because that was what the log was for. But she drew the tree small in the margin under the date. Nobody in Scarrow ever asked why every October page held the same careful tree, or why she always kept the stair swept for a visitor who never came.
