Palm trees and red sunset on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A small island with two black palm trees sits above a solid red sun, with two black seabirds in the sky and three bands of blue and black wavy lines for the sea. The palm fronds and trunks are bold black with heavy outlines, and the sun is the only area of solid colour besides the blue water. The design is centred on the forearm, with other tattoos partly visible at the top edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody aboard the Mary Pell had ever seen the island, and Captain Okonedo swore it was a rumour the cook started to keep the deckhands honest. Still, every evening at six Ruth Quayle climbed onto the foredeck with a tin of biscuits and watched the western sea, because she had wagered her wages against the cook's brother that she would spot it before the Azores.

They were nine days out of Falmouth with a hold full of tinned peaches when the sun went down so red it looked like a coal dropped into the water. Ruth counted the birds first, two black shapes skimming the swell, then the scrap of land beneath the glow. Two palms stood on it, bent the same way, as if they had been leaning in to hear each other. Nobody else looked up. The mate was arguing with the log and the cook was singing at his onions.

She went down to the chart room and found the page where the island should have been. It wasn't there. Only blank blue, and a pencilled note in the margin in her own handwriting, from a voyage she could not remember making, which read simply: go back for the peaches.

Next morning the sea lay flat as a plate, and when Ruth searched for the island there was only ridged water, three bands of it, rolling toward the horizon like the lines a child draws for waves. She told the captain. He nodded, poured her a tot of rum, and said the sea kept its own charts. She paid the cook his wager regardless, and kept the folded note tucked inside her boot.
