Palm tree on an ankle
Botanical · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small palm tree sits on the side of a bare ankle, with a slender curved trunk that widens at the base and fronds drawn as dark, softly shaded shapes. The tattoo is in black ink with grey shading in the fronds and no colour. It is centred on the lower leg and foot, with a red and black tiled floor in the background.

Dear Tomasz,

The palm you sent in the tin came through the lock at Teddington looking like a burnt broom, but I've kept it alive on the roof of the barge in a bucket of river silt and rainwater I collected in the washing-up bowl. Mrs Okonedo at the Richmond bridge said it would sulk for a month before it forgave us. She was right. This morning there was one new frond, folded tight as a fist, pushing up out of the middle as if it had something to prove.
You'll laugh, but I've been reading the almanac you left aboard. Palms don't grow straight up. They lean towards whatever light they can find, and the trunk bends to make room for itself. Our skipper says the same of the bargemen who've worked this stretch for forty years. Trunk bent, fronds reaching out over the water, roots in mud that wouldn't take anything else.
The fronds are the part I can't get right on paper. Dark at the tips where the shade falls, grey where the light catches them, like soot settling on a hot afternoon. I've drawn it eleven times on the backs of the manifests. Each time it comes out looking more like a fountain than a tree.
Fold this into your coat and come home before the frost. The palm can wait for you on the roof, and if it doesn't, we'll buy a better one from the market at Kingston and you can pretend the old one did it on purpose.
Your brother, Aleksy
