Nell Okonedo kept the postcard in a biscuit tin with the spare keys, and every February she took it out, held it up to the kitchen window, and complained to nobody in particular that the sun was far too red. Harold had sent it from a place called Saltwick Cay, which did not appear in the atlas at the library, and the stamp came from a country that had changed its name twice since.

He had been a cable man on a survey boat out of Hull, the sort of job where you spent three weeks on grey water and came home smelling of diesel and bad ferry tea. Nell never believed the island was real. "It's a lump with a tree on it," she told her sister. "Men draw what they miss."

Then in the spring of 1983 the boat put in at a dock she couldn't pronounce, and the card arrived a fortnight later: one bent palm over a single grey spit of sand, the sun sitting on the sea like a coin in a slot. On the back, in pencil, he had written, Ran out of blue ink, borrowed the engine room's red. Sun's the same colour as your kettle. Come and see it before the tree goes.

She never went. The tree did go, in a storm two summers later, Harold wrote, and the sun stayed exactly where it was. Every February she props the card against the glass, and for a minute the low light fills the kitchen with the same red, and she lets it.
