Palm tree sunset and flower on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A traditional style tattoo shows a black palm tree with a curved trunk above a sunset over a dark hill, with three birds in flight above and beside it. Below the scene, a red flower with a white centre and dark teal leaves forms the base of the design. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with flat red, orange, teal and brown fills, set against dark background and partly visible tattoos on the limb.

Shift closer, the fire is only sulking tonight and I have no breath to spare coaxing it. You want the one about the boat that found its way home? Then hush, and mind the bowl at your knee. My grandmother told it to me with her hands full of wool, so I shall tell it with my hands full of bread.

Pelos of Akrotiri Bay sailed out with one copper pot, a sack of barley and a debt to Hesk the moneylender, who had lent him the boat and wanted it back with interest. The sea took three days to forgive him. On the fourth morning the wind died and his sail hung from the yard like wet linen, and the water in his skin had gone the colour of old tea. Then three gulls came out of the grey, turned lazy circles over his mast, and began to fly west, calling back to him each time he drifted off their line.
He followed them until the sun was a red coin sinking behind a dark hill, and there, pressed low against the shore, was an island he had never seen on any chart in Hesk's office. A single palm leaned over the sand like an old man reading a letter. Beneath its roots a spring came up cold and sweet, and Pelos drank until he wept, which is the only honest way to drink. He filled the pot, pocketed one fallen nut, and sailed home by the stars.
Hesk was waiting on the quay with a lamp. He lifted the pot, weighed the barley in his palm, and laughed. Pelos said nothing. He pressed the nut into the dirt of the moneylender's yard and poured the spring water over it, every drop. That palm now shades the whole street, and Hesk's grandsons pay their debts in shade, which is cheaper than coin. If you doubt me, go down to the harbour at evening and count the gulls. There will be three, and they will be watching which of you is thirsty.
