Small black sprig tattoo on an ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare legs are raised against a blurred beach and sea. A small black tattoo sits on the outer ankle, showing a short sprig with a dark rounded element and several dots. The ink is solid black on tanned skin, and the warm, sunlit background fills most of the frame.

The beach was empty except for Pieter, the wire-walker, who had been sleeping in the caravan with his boots on since the autumn. He sat on an upturned crate and watched the waves come in grey and flat. "They'll sell the big top in May," he said. "Then what do we do, Nell? Sell the rosemary?"
I didn't answer him. I knelt at the tideline and filled the bucket, and a gull landed on its rim and looked at me as if I owed it rent. When I glanced up, Pieter had walked out along the wet sand as far as the groyne, one arm lifted, balancing on nothing at all, the way he used to on the high wire before the net was cut.
When I got back, Ottilie had her scissors out. She snipped a single sprig, pressed one dark berry from the bag into the lining of my coat with her thumb, and sewed it shut. "Keep the berry," she said. "The rest blows off." Pieter left in May with the last of the money. I still carry the coat, and the berry is still there, small and round, under the stitching.
