Palm trees and sunset on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A large palm tree silhouette fills the upper forearm, with a second, smaller palm beside it. Behind them, a red and orange sunset fades into a calm horizon, with a small dark figure sitting on the shore at the lower left. The palms are rendered in soft black shading, and the sky and sea use smooth blended colour, with the warm tones dominating the piece.

Nobody on the front at Puerto Calma believed the palms had been planted by a man who couldn't swim, so Ramón stopped telling people. He dug the holes by hand over most of a week, because the sand kept sliding back in before he could set the roots.

After that he took his folding stool down to the water every evening and sat with his back to the bar. He called the taller tree Inés, though he never said so to her face. The sky over the bay turned the colour of cheap wine and then of coals, and the sea picked up the fire and passed it back in long, slow strokes that never quite reached the shingle. He said the trees were the only things on the coast that had never once asked him for money.
One evening his granddaughter Lucía, who was nine and believed most things she was told, asked him why he always sat facing the sun when the palms were the better view. He said he was waiting for the trees to stop being something he had done and start being something that happened. She rolled her eyes, decided that was an old man's nonsense, and went off after a crab in the rock pools.
The next summer a frond from the taller palm dropped across his stool, and he left it there for an hour while the light went. When the sun finally slid under the water he turned round, looked up at the black fans against the last of the colour, and for once did not bother to count them.
