Panther head and rose on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A snarling black panther head with yellow eyes and a third eye on its forehead sits beneath a red rose surrounded by dark leaves. The word LOVE is written in small black capitals below the jaw. Bold black outlines, flat red, yellow and grey fills and a plain background give it a classic, high-contrast composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The menagerie came over on the Thursday boat with its cages lashed to the deckhouse, and by Friday the whole of Skerrow knew the black cat had got out. Mrs Tilly swore she saw it on the harbour wall at first light, its yellow eyes lit like lamps in the mist. My father said a panther on a rock this size would have nothing to eat but gulls, and went back to mending nets.

I found it three nights later in the old net store, crouched on the rafters above the drying lines, a smear of red on its chin from one of the Pryce hens. It did not run. It watched me with those yellow eyes, and then, which I have never told anyone, a third eye opened in the middle of its forehead, pale and steady, fixed on something far out past the Stacks where I could see nothing but dark water.

The next morning the mist lifted early and the Mary Ann came in from the north grounds with a full hold, the first in a month. Her skipper said a black shape had stood on the headland all night, not moving, so he could steer by it. Nobody on Skerrow thought to ask the menagerie for a reward, and nobody asked why the cat never came down from the rafters again.

I still leave it a saucer of milk at dusk, and it still watches the sea for us.
