Woman on a gorilla head on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A woman with long dark hair sits on top of a snarling gorilla head with yellow eyes and an open red mouth showing teeth. The linework is bold and outlined, with flat colour fills and solid black shading in the fur. Red, yellow and pink dominate, with a partial banner and leaves visible at the top of the forearm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The menagerie ship Halcyon Dane went onto the Mewstone in the small hours of a February gale, and by dawn the only living things on our rock were two gulls, me, and a gorilla called Sultan who had decided the lantern room was his. I had a ledger, a tin of cocoa and a lamp that needed trimming. He had yellow eyes and a mouth like the inside of a post box, and he was not interested in negotiation.

The woman came in on the second tide, lashed to a spar with a length of rope and a torn circus poster stuck to her hip. Her name was Maud Varley and she had trained Sultan from a cub in Antwerp, which she told me while she was still coughing up brine. She didn't ask whether I had a gun. She walked straight up the iron stairs, past the bell, and when the beast rose at her with his lips pulled back she sat down on top of his great hunched head as though it were a bench on the pier and rested one hand on his skull.

He went quiet. I have kept a light for forty-one years and never seen anything settle a room like that. She hummed something Dutch, and he let her fingers work through the black fur while the storm blew itself out over the Sound.

When the relief boat came round the point in the morning, Maud had gone on the first launch with a hamper of biscuits, and Sultan was sitting in the lantern room with his back to the glass. I trimmed the wick that night. The beam swept the water the way it always does, and the beast watched it go round, his eyes catching the light like two more lamps.
