Geometric wolf head on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A wolf head is drawn in profile on the forearm, split into two halves with one side showing a fine-line eye and the other a more abstract eye framed by patterned segments. Dotwork circles, a triangle and small dots surround the design, and the linework is fine and dense with stippled shading. The tattoo is entirely black ink on pale skin, set against a white textured wall with a dark sleeve at the edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Before the bell at the mill-top rang, Anna Brandt lit the ovens in the village of Hollin, and every morning a grey wolf sat on the step of her yard waiting for the first loaf. Her grandmother had fed it, and her grandmother's grandmother before that. The village said the wolf had never once come inside and never once gone hungry. Nobody asked what it was waiting for.

One winter the frost came early and the flour ran low. Anna gave the wolf the crust of the last loaf. It looked at her with one eye that was clear as a well and one that was full of patterned shadow, like the lace on the church window. It said nothing. It took the bread and walked out past the mill toward the black line of the pines, and the moon, a hard white circle, followed it over the ridge.

Three nights later the miller's son came hammering at the door, his hands raw, saying the race had frozen and the sacks were stuck in the ice. Anna took her peel and her lantern and went down with him. At the water, where the ice had split in a clean triangle, the wolf stood waiting. When she set the lantern down, it nosed one sack free and was gone again before she could thank it.

In spring Anna baked a loaf shaped like a wolf's head and set it on the step. By morning it was gone, though no tracks led away from the yard. She kept the ovens lit before the bell for the rest of her life. Each dawn she brushed the dots of flour from her apron, and she never once found the step empty.
