Paper airplane with dotted trail on shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of a paper airplane sits on the shoulder, with a dotted line curving up and looping behind it. The linework is thin and clean, and the airplane is drawn in simple outline with no shading. The photograph is in black and white, with a metal necklace with a heart pendant visible on the left and a dark background.

He folded his planes from the backs of the Co-op pay slips, because nobody on Front Row had paper to spare, and he sharpened his pencil with his teeth at the kitchen table while the stove ticked. The planes were never clever. A sharp nose, two wings, a flat tail. What he cared about was the line he drew after each one, a dotted trail, one dot for every breath he held while it went.
Mary Cotton lived across the beck, up on Shaw Row, where the lamps went out first. Every Friday he threw one over the slag heap and it caught the wind off the engine house, and every Saturday one came back to his step with a single word written on it in her round hand. Home. Light. Wait.
The last one he sent went wrong. It caught the wheel-house roof and looped once, slow, round the great iron pulley, and he drew that loop too, a small circle in the pencil trail, like a man pausing to think. It came down in the schoolyard. Mary picked it up, read the dots first, then the word, and held it up to the window where the afternoon light came through. Tom came home that night the long way round, past the chapel, with coal dust in his collar and a fresh sheet of pay slip folded in his pocket, and he never once threw another one that didn't land.
