Paper plane with dashed flight path
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line outline of a folded paper plane points right, with a dashed trail looping behind it. The linework is thin and even, in black ink with no shading. The plane sits centre right on a plain area of pale skin, with a dark fabric edge visible at the top of the frame.

The plane had been folded from the back of a gas bill, and Tomasz swore it would clear the far hedge if he could only read the wind. He stood at the top of the allotment steps licking his thumb and holding it up like a man pricing bread, while Nell sat on the water butt with her knees pulled up and pretended not to care who won.

He threw it low. It climbed, thought better of it, dipped over the rhubarb, and turned in a long lazy loop that brought it back past the washing line. Its path was a row of little stops he had drawn in the air with his free hand, one dash for every gust, and Nell found herself counting them the way she counted stairs in the dark. The plane came down in Mrs Pryce's beans, nose first, as if it had meant to all along.
Tomasz said the bill was in the wrong order and the sums were wrong. Nell unfolded it on the step. On the blank side, in pencil, he had written the times of the bus to Hull and the number of the train, and under them, very small, the words back by first frost. He was leaving on Friday for a job on the coast. She had not known, and he had clearly been waiting for her to ask.
She smoothed the paper flat, found the pencil stub in her cardigan pocket, and began to fold it again, slowly, the way he had shown her, nose first, so it would keep its shape. Then she threw it hard, straight over the hedge towards the road, and watched it ride the wind the way his never had, all the way out of sight. Then she went in to find another bill.
