Paper plane tattoos on two feet

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet rest on pale sand, each with a small black tattoo of a paper plane trailing a dotted loop. The linework is thin and clean, with minimal shading and no added colour. The tattoos sit near the centre of the frame, with a fine string anklet visible on the upper foot.

You fold the last plane on the kitchen table while your nan argues with the kettle, using a page torn from the back of a gas bill because it is the only paper in Flat 14 nobody will miss. Below the window the car park is a grey square with three wheelie bins and a dented hatchback with one wing mirror. Your brother Danny says a plane cannot fly from the fourteenth floor without nosediving into the bins, and you tell him it only needs a proper push and a wind off the river.

The wind comes up at teatime, shoving crisps packets into the corners of the walkway. You lean over the balcony rail, cold metal under your forearms, and let go. The plane dips, catches, then swings out in a wide loop above the bins before straightening towards the football pitch. Danny counts the seconds out loud. You stop counting at nine, because the loop has gone on longer than it should, and the plane is coming back up towards you, slow and deliberate, like something that has decided where it wants to land.

It stalls against the railing and drops onto the balcony mat at your feet. You pick it up and turn it over. On the underside, in careful pencil that has smudged from being folded, someone has written a single word: Again. You do not remember writing it, and Danny swears he didn't either.

You tuck the plane into your coat pocket, tear another strip from the gas bill and, for the first time, draw a dotted line on it before you fold. Then you hold it out over the rail and wait for the wind to find you.
