Small wave tattoo on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a bare foot and ankle resting on sand, with a small, single-line wave tattoo on the outer side of the foot. The linework is thin and solid with no shading, and the wave curls to the right. The image is black and white, and a beaded anklet with a small elephant charm sits above the tattoo, with the sand filling the background.

I had spent a month on slate ruling practice lines, and every curl I drew came out like a question mark somebody had sat on. Mr Pargeter only ever shook his head and tapped the next slate toward me.

The commission came in October. A bathing hut at the far end of Porthkerris wanted a small mark on its door, nothing gaudy, just something to tell the visitors which one belonged to the Nance family. Mrs Nance wanted it curling to the right, toward the land, because her late husband had always said the sea was trying to get home. I thought that was a sentimental reason for a wave, but I kept my opinions behind my teeth and wet the brush.
I painted it at dead low water, crouched on the sand with the door propped on two crates. I did not lift the brush once. When I stood back it looked thin and certain, a single breath of black on the grey. The tide came in while I packed up, slow and ordinary, and I watched it slide up the shingle toward the hut. It reached the bottom of the door and stopped, the foam hissing a hand's width short of my curl, as if it had read the thing and decided not to argue.
