Stacked teacups and flowers on an arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A stack of three teacups, one orange, one teal and one pale blue, holds pink flowers and a purple fan. Grey-shaded and pink flowers sit beneath the cups, with bold black outlines throughout. The colour is saturated against the pale skin, and the design fills the frame from top to bottom.

At Hollin Cross the refreshment room had one cracked urn and a shelf of cups that nobody had ever matched. The winter the signal box flooded, a boy called Tobias Crane came in off the platform carrying a bunch of pink blossom cut from the orchard behind the goods yard. He had nothing to pay with. Maud took the flowers, filled the top cup with water and set them in it, then stacked the others beneath as if she were building a tower for the wind to knock down.

The stationmaster said she was a fool, and the trains ran on time regardless. But after that the purple paper fan the ticket clerk used against the stove stayed tucked behind the stack. Travellers stranded by the delays would fan themselves against the damp and talk about where they were going, and Maud listened and refilled the pot without charge.

Years later the boy came back on the quarter past nine with a ticket to somewhere far off. The blossom was long dead and the cups were still stacked on the shelf. He lifted the pale blue one down, drank from it standing up, and set it back exactly where it had been.
