Teacup with tea bag on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A large teacup with a decorated scalloped pattern, a handle and a hanging tea bag is tattooed on the forearm. Bold black outlines define the cup, and red flowers with green leaves fill the lower band. The design is shown straight on against a blue fabric background.

The kettle has already boiled dry once, and Mrs Pyle is standing at the sink with her back to you, pretending she hasn't been watching the clock above the wireless. On the oilcloth sits the good cup, the one with the scalloped band and the red flowers that look stamped on by a child's thumb. Your father bought it at the Co-op the spring the chapel roof came in, and it has never once held anything stronger than tea.

She drops a paper tea bag into the pot, the new kind that came into Hallam's shop in a square box, and frowns at it as though it might be a trick. 'It's lazy,' she says. 'Proper tea needs a spoon and a bit of patience.' You tell her the string is a clever idea. She sniffs, but she lets you lift the little tag and hang it over the rim, the way the advert showed it.
The afternoon goes on like that. Rain on the coal bunker. The dog asleep in a square of sun. She tells you about the telegram in 1944, the one that came to the wrong house on Chapel Row, and how she carried this same cup out to the step that morning in case anyone came up the path to ask whether she took sugar. Nobody did. You pour her a second cup, careful of the handle, and the tea comes out pale and honest.
When you leave she presses the cup into your hands wrapped in the Gazette. 'Bring it back full,' she says. The tag is still hanging over the side, dripping onto the step, and you don't have the heart to tell her it has already gone cold.
