Passport stamps tattoo on upper arm

Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo covers the upper arm with overlapping passport and visa stamps, including circular and rectangular designs with dates, place names and printed numbers. The stamps are outlined with clean linework and filled with flat red, blue, green and black ink. The stamps are arranged at varied angles across the arm, creating a dense collage that wraps around the curve of the arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The night shift at Brenner Lane started at eleven, when the coaches stopped coming and only lorries and the odd lone walker remained. Dilys Harrowgate kept the stamps in a biscuit tin under the counter, each one wrapped in a strip of flannel so the rubber wouldn't dry out. By two in the morning she had sorted them the way her father taught her: red for refusals, blue for arrivals, green for anything needing a second look, and black for the dead letters nobody wanted to claim.

A young man came to the hatch at ten past three with a passport so creased it had been folded into a paper boat. He had stamps from places she knew only from the wall map: a town in Silesia, a harbour in Lisbon, a place on the Black Sea with a name like a sneeze. He asked whether the Helsinki entry from 1979 still counted. She turned the page to the circle with its faded date and told him stamps never expire. They only get older, and older things are usually allowed in.

She pressed the blue ink for his arrival and the date came out crooked, tilted across a green one from a year she didn't recognise. He laughed and said it looked like a route someone had drawn in a hurry. She didn't disagree. When the first grey light reached the car park, she unwrapped the tin's flannel and found her own fingers stained blue at the knuckles. Out of habit she pressed the side of her hand to the back of the ledger, then wrote beneath it: Dilys Harrowgate, admitted, one night, no return date set.
