Pastel mermaid scale tattoo on both legs
Calf · Colour · Photo
Two bare legs are raised against a pale draped fabric, with both feet visible at the top of the frame. The skin is covered in overlapping rows of rounded scales and sweeping fin shapes, drawn with smooth, soft outlines and gentle shading. The palette is pastel, with pink, lilac, blue, green and yellow scales blending across the calves.

Every morning before the gulls woke, Maud Penhallow lit the ovens at the bottom of Fish Lane and waited for the sea to knock on the back door. It never knocked the same way twice. Some mornings it was a wet slap of kelp against the step. Some mornings it was only the smell of salt coming up through the flour sacks.

The year the herring failed, a woman came up the lane with bare feet and a wrap of pale cloth, and asked for bread without salt in it. Maud gave her the heel of yesterday's loaf. The woman ate it slowly, looking at the trays of sugared cakes in the window, the pink and lilac and green piped in overlapping rows like the backs of the fish that had stopped coming. "Those are ours," she said. "Someone has been copying us."
Maud asked what the woman wanted in return. She said only that the cakes be left on the step each night, scale upon scale, so the tide would know the lane still remembered it. Maud agreed, thinking it a strange price for a crust. Every dawn she set out the piped fins and the blue-green sweep of tail, and every dawn the step was bare, though nobody in the village ever saw anything take them.
One morning the step was wet and empty, and in the flour bin lay a single scale of beaten silver the size of a coin. Maud kept it there. Her loaves rose higher after that, the herring came back in the spring, and she never once again left the step without a tray upon it.
