Pastel mermaid scale tattoo across legs and back
Back · Colour · Photo
The photograph shows a person lying on white bedding in two side views, with tattooed mermaid scales covering the legs, hips and lower back. The scales are soft, shaded and layered in rows, with larger yellow and green fins on the thighs and calves and tail-like fins at the ankles. In the right panel, a dark portrait of a woman with red details sits on the upper back, set against the pastel scales.

Mags Teague had mended nets for thirty years before anyone at Skerrow Haven thought to ask whether she could mend a hull. The Brightwater came in on the Tuesday tide with a split down her starboard side, and the yard men shrugged and said the paint would have to wait for spring. Mags only wanted the old lantern and the tin of pastel distemper she kept for the harbour wall.

She worked through the night with the door propped open to the cold. Every scale she laid overlapped the one below, a row at a time, blue fading into lilac where the light from the quay caught it, green gone soft at the edges. Her grandson Robbie sat on an upturned creel and asked why she bothered with colour nobody would see once the boat was back in the water. She told him the fish that swam under the Brightwater knew what she had painted, and that was enough for any hull.
Near dawn she reached the bow and stopped. Someone had scratched a name into the wood years before, half worn away, and beside it a woman's face she had never painted, dark-haired and unsmiling, looking out toward the open water. Mags had meant to cover it. Instead she mixed a little yellow into the last fin, then left the face where it was.
The Brightwater sailed on the morning ebb with her new skin drying in the salt wind. Robbie stood on the quay and watched the fins catch the sun, green and gold, until the boat became only a shape on the grey line. Mags went home to bed, and for the first time in years she slept without dreaming of nets.
