Full leg scale and fin tattoo

Calf · Colour · Photo

Two legs and feet lie on a grey sheet, covered from the calves down to the toes with a tattoo of overlapping scales and flowing fin shapes. The scales are rendered with soft shading and the fins with pink and purple outlines that extend onto the feet. The palette runs through pink, purple, teal, green and yellow, and the design wraps around the legs so it reads as a single continuous pattern.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Harrow family's show had been dying for three summers when the mermaid asked to go home. Nobody in the fen towns came to see the lion any more, nor the strongman who could no longer lift the piano, and the big top, patched with tarred sailcloth, let in more rain than sun. Only Nell, who swam in the glass tank behind the ticket booth, still drew a crowd. She drew it with a tail painted from her hips to her toes, scale over scale, in pink and teal and a green like river weed.

Old Silas Harrow had paid a painter in Lynn to make the tail. The painter worked three months on it, laying each scale with a brush of camel hair, until the fins flared purple at the edges like the fins of a fish that has been out of water too long. Every night Nell climbed into the tank and the lamps made the colours run like oil on a puddle. She never spoke to the children who pressed their faces to the glass. She only pointed east, towards the sea wall, where the mud shone at low tide.

On the last night of the Lynn fair, a fisherman's widow came to the booth with a string of eels over her shoulder and asked who had given the girl her tail. Silas said the painter had. The widow shook her head. The sea had lent its colours, she said, and a loan must be paid back in the same coin. So at the turn of the tide they carried the tank down to the wash, and Nell slid out of the glass into the grey water. The scales lifted off her one by one, pink, then teal, then green, and drifted out over the mud like coins thrown from a window.

Nell was never seen again, and the circus folded before the frost. The old people of the fen still say that on still evenings the mud shines with a colour no painter has managed, and that the fins, if you look closely, move under the reeds. Silas kept one scale in his waistcoat pocket until he died. It was always warm.
