The lift in Calder House had been broken since Easter, so the baker's girl carried the sugar up on her back, fourteen floors, and each time she reached the top she said the same thing to the pigeons on the ledge. Nobody living in a tower should have to climb for sweetness. The pigeons never answered. Old Mrs Pelly on the top floor did, from behind her door with its brass heart nailed in the middle, and she always asked what flavour it was.

Mrs Pelly kept a lipstick case on her windowsill, a perfume bottle with a silver cap, and a whisk from the bakery she had run before the council knocked it down. She had lived so high, she said, because the sky was the only thing in the estate that never changed its mind. When Nell asked her about the balloon her grandmother used to talk of, the one shaped like a cupcake that carried women off the car park roof on Sundays, Mrs Pelly only laughed and said that was a story for people who had stopped looking up.

So Nell made one anyway, frosting piped in pastel stripes and a cloud of sugar on the rim, and she stacked three macarons on the lid because the old woman liked things that stood up straight. She knocked on the brass heart with the flat of the whisk. The door opened onto an empty room, the perfume still on the table, and a note beside the macarons in careful blue ink: eat the top one first, then come down.

Nell ate the top one on the landing, and it tasted of rain and of something she could not name. From the window of the fourteenth floor she watched a small pink shape lift off the roof of the car park, slow and certain, the pigeons scattering to make room for it.
