Alice in Wonderland flash sheet

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A flash sheet of five separate designs on a white background, drawn with bold black outlines and flat colour. The subjects are a cupcake with a Eat Me ribbon, a bottle with a Drink Me ribbon, a teapot with a clock face, a grinning Cheshire Cat in a teacup marked tea, and a White Rabbit holding a pocket watch in a teacup marked late, with rose and pansy-style flowers and small hearts filling the gaps. The palette is mainly mint green, pink, navy and gold, with soft shading on the cups and bottle.

The crate from Stoke arrived on a Tuesday, and Mrs Pargeter unwrapped each cup as if it might go off. Mint green, with gold handles curled like fern fronds. She read the lettering aloud. Tea on one. Late on the other. 'Somebody at the works has a sense of humour,' she said, and sent me to fetch the order book, which said nothing about cats.

We set them on the shelf above the urn. The regulars came in at half past eleven and asked for a pot for two, so for a month the cups took turns being the one they reached for. The cat cup went to the widow with the terrier, who never tipped and always left a crumb of walnut cake on the saucer like a receipt. The late cup went to Mr Lusk, who had been late for everything since the war, including his own wedding breakfast. He once told me a clock is only ever wrong in the company of other people.

On the last Saturday in August the bell over the door rang at a quarter to four, and Mr Lusk came in holding his pocket watch out in front of him like a compass. It had stopped. He sat down without being asked, pulled the late cup towards him, and turned it so the word faced him. 'Well,' he said, 'at least I'm on time for something.'

I poured. We drank in silence while the shop clock ticked on past four, and neither of us looked at it.
