Six cartoon cupcake, ice cream and lollipop designs

Colour · Flash

The image shows six small, separate designs on a plain white background: three cupcakes, two ice cream cones and a swirled lollipop with a bow. Each motif has dark outlines with flat, simple fills and little or no shading. The palette is bright and mixed, with pink, teal, purple, red, yellow and blue, and the designs are evenly spaced in a grid of two rows of three.

The wasps have found the trestle table before you have, so you flick them off the sprinkle tub with a tea towel while Auntie Vi counts coins into a tin shaped like a Victoria sponge. Behind the stall the Discovery apples hang heavy, and the orchard runs down to the brook in rows so straight they look ruled.

The cakes are her idea, always. Blueberries from the bushes by the gate, cherries split and stoned on the kitchen step, soft ice cream from a machine that hums like a fridge. Every one gets a cherry or a fistful of hundreds and thousands, because she says a child remembers the top, not the cake. You have sold forty by eleven. Then a boy in a borrowed cricket jumper stops at the lollipop jar, turning the pink and green swirl over in his palm, and asks what the bow costs.

Nothing, you say, and only hear afterwards that you have said it in her voice. He can't pay anything, he says. His nan's cottage backs onto the far end of the orchard and he has been sent for windfalls for the jam. You give him a lollipop anyway. He tucks it behind his ear like a pencil. Auntie Vi sees, says nothing, and slides a pale pink cone across the cloth towards him.

By four the fete is packing up and the tin is heavier than it was. You walk the rows with the empty tray and find, under the first tree, half hidden in the grass, a windfall with a bite out of one side and a ring of wasps working at it. You leave it there. The boy is already climbing the wall, the lollipop bobbing above the hedge like a small bright sun, and you stand in the long grass until it has gone beyond the last row of trees, its bow still bright against the green.
