Galaxy cat silhouette on shoulder blade
Back · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a walking cat in solid silhouette, with black legs and tail and a body filled with a blended cosmic design of purple, magenta, yellow and green speckled with small star-like dots. The edges are crisp, and the colour fades softly into the dark outline across the body. The cat sits diagonally on the upper back, with the person's hair visible at the left edge and a plain background of a door and grey artwork.

You were sent to the granary to count sacks, not to chase the grey cat that had been walking the rafters since the flood season began. But it kept stopping at the open hatch with its tail curled like a question mark, and when you finally followed it down the ladder to the river steps, the water below was black and full of small lights. The fishermen of the town called them the hunters' lanterns and never looked at them for long.

The cat walked out over the reeds without a splash. Where its paws touched the surface, the dark turned violet, then magenta, a rose-coloured smear like the sky a moment after sunset. Gold rose through its flank, and green ran down the length of its tail as though someone had spilled paint into the night. Each mark on its coat was a star, and you could have counted them if you had been patient. You were not patient.
In the middle of the current the cat stopped and looked back at you. You understood that it wanted you to see what it carried. Its coat was not dyed. It was borrowed from the sky, the way the temple priests borrowed oil from the lamps, and every night the cat walked the water to make sure the stars had not wandered off. Tonight one was missing from its left flank, a pale speck no bigger than a grain of barley, and you were the only person who had seen the cat at all.
You knelt on the cold stone and pressed your palm flat to the water where the missing star should be. Something warm bumped against your fingers. The cat had already moved on across the river, black legs lifting one after another, and just above its hip a new point of light was burning steadily, as if it had always been there.
