Galaxy wolf howling on the lower back
Back · Colour · Photo
A wolf sits with its head raised and jaws open in a howl, outlined in solid black. The body is filled with a night sky of dense white stars, four-point sparkles and soft blue and violet clouds. A bright pink and magenta nebula glows across the chest and shoulder area, and the image is shown straight on at close range.

Sit closer, you lot, the fire on Harrow Deep never keeps the dark off for long. You've heard how the wolf came down from the Carrow Reach, grey as ash and hungry. That is only half of it. The old ones say she was a hunter who ran the long orbit with her pack, and when the pack's ship went quiet between the moons, she did what wolves do and went looking for the sound of her own.

She found it past the rings, a thin signal bleeding from a drifting freighter. Her people called the place the Sleeve, a stretch of dust so thick the stars went out one by one like candles pinched between finger and thumb. She ran into it anyway. Nobody has ever said how long she was in there. Long enough that when she came out, the dark had settled into her fur, and every hair held a little of the sky she'd crossed. Her shoulders caught a nebula the colour of a forge when the iron goes soft. Her ribs took the blue of deep water.
Now here is the part you need to remember. On a clear night, when the ice-moon hangs low and the colony lamps dim, she stands on the ridge above the landing field and throws back her head. Her jaws open and the sound goes up, and the stars in her flank answer, a shiver running out through her whole length. Every ship ever lost in the Sleeve is said to hear it and turn its nose toward home.
So when you're out past the rings next season and the instruments go silent, don't panic. Stop, breathe, and listen for the wolf. She's always singing for someone.
