Rose-filled cat on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A cat seated in profile, looking up and to the left, with its tail curled up behind it. The bold black outline is filled with a pattern of pink rose outlines, small green leaves and soft yellow-green wash. The cat sits centrally on pale skin against a plain background, with a patterned shirt visible at the right edge.

Don't you go telling Mrs Pardoe it was the paste. She'll have us all believing it was damp, and it was not damp. It was Albert Finch's cat, Nancy, who came in through the back of the parlour the afternoon he was hanging the rose paper, the big cabbage-rose stuff his brother had brought down from Leeds on the carrier's cart.

Albert had the table out and the brush going, and the room smelled of flour and vinegar. Nancy sat on the sill watching him the way cats do, as if he owed her money. Then he turned for the next roll and she stepped straight into the wet paste pot, pink to the ears. Before anybody could grab her she was off across the lino, leaving sticky prints all over the place, and every print bloomed roses where her feet went.
She settled on the hearth and looked up at the ceiling as though someone upstairs had called her name, and that was how she stayed. Albert tried soap and a scrubbing brush. Mrs Pardoe tried lard. The vicar said a prayer over her and she purred through the whole of it. The green came later, little leaves pushing out from under her ribs as if she was growing them on purpose.
When the Finches moved to Whitby in the spring, nobody could say which of them was the cat. Albert left her behind with the house, and the new family painted the parlour white. The next morning there she was on the fresh whitewash, sitting up and looking at the ceiling, pink roses coming up through the paint one by one, as if she had only been waiting for someone to notice.
