Small triangle line tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of a triangle outlined with dashed fine lines and small cross shapes at the corners sits on a finger. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is black against the skin. The close crop centres the tattoo on the finger, with a sparkly ring and a manicured nail in the frame and a blurred script text on the fabric beneath the hand.

The chart was still damp from the wash water when the second mate slid it across the table toward you, pencil dashes wobbling over the Atlantic. 'Three noon sights,' he said, 'and they won't agree. Which one do we believe?' You had the dividers in hand before he finished, walking them along the parallels the way your father taught you on the Severn, one leg on the latitude, one on the longitude, until the points met.

Each sight earned a small cross where its lines crossed, pressed hard so the spray wouldn't take it. Three crosses, and three dashed lines joining them into a triangle that seemed to shrink every time the ship rolled. The captain blamed the chronometer. You blamed the men reading it, because the sun had never once lied to you. You spent the whole watch under the swinging lamp, redrawing, until the lines looked like a child's sketch of a bird.

At four bells the lookout called a smudge of cloud low on the larboard bow, and it did not drift with the wind. Then came the birds, then a smell of wet earth carried out over the water. The captain climbed up with the chart under his arm and studied the little triangle for a long moment. He took your pencil, drew a fourth cross outside it, and said the island sat exactly where you had put it, which was more than the chronometer had managed.

The land came up green out of the haze while he went below without another word. You stayed on deck with the chart folded inside your coat, the crosses still dark through the paper, and you thought that a mark made in good faith is the only kind the sea ever forgives.
