Geometric lotus and dots on a wrist
Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand and lower forearm, with a large lotus-style tattoo made of geometric petals and fine dotwork shading on the wrist that extends up the forearm. Three small dots sit below it on the back of the hand, with a few more dots on the fingers. The tattoo is in black and grey, and the pale hand rests on a silver foil surface against a plain background.

Dear Nell,

The frost has got into the theodolite again, so I have been sitting with it in my lap by the stove like a sick child, warming the brass with my palms until the bubble settles. The men think I am mad. Mr Abbott wants the ditch line marked before the thaw, and the only way to lay it true across Hollow Fen is to take a bearing from the three iron pegs the old drainers left, then carry it out over the water on boards.
Yesterday the mist lifted at noon and I saw the whole thing laid out: the great flat field fanned into dark triangles where the sluices meet, and at its centre a rosette of dykes, petals of water bending toward the pump house. It looked like the rose window at Ely you drew for me once, only drawn by someone who had never seen a church. I wanted to tell you that, and then I thought you'd say I was getting soft in the head out there.
The last peg is in a patch of reed where the ice is thinnest. I went out on the boards with the chain, counting my steps the way Father taught us, and pressed my marks into the frozen mud, one, two, three, a straight line out to the sluice gate. When the thaw comes they will be under water and no one will ever see them, but I know where they are.
I'll be home for Christmas if the pump holds. Save me the end of the pie.
Your loving brother, Tom
