A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lace cat had been sewn from the last of Mrs Pargeter's pink wool, and it had sat on the top shelf of the Pennyfeather tent for eleven seasons without once being won. Ada Pell knew this because she dusted it every Monday, when the fair was packed up in the car park behind the chip van and the travelling folk had gone to bed in their caravans.

Her uncle said the cat was bad luck. He said it watched the crowd with those glass-blue eyes and made the gamblers lose their nerve. Ada thought it only looked tired, the way a cat does when it has been stared at too long by people who want something from it. Its patterns ran over its flanks like frost on a window, purple and blue woven through the pink until the whole thing seemed to breathe when the lamps flickered.

On the last night of the season, a boy with grease on his cuffs threw three rings and hit the peg every time. Uncle Walt reached for the cat, then stopped with his hand half out. The boy did not want it. He wanted to know where the pattern came from, and whether the lace on its face was real. Ada took it down herself and turned it over. Stitched on its underside, in faded red thread, were the words: Keep her warm.

She carried the cat out past the dodgems and sat it on the wall by the dark river, where the fair lights were folding up one by one. Then she tucked its paws beneath it, the way it liked, and went back for her coat.
